The Flaming Lips in Athens, Georgia in '06 was ABSOLUTELY one of the worst concerts I have ever attended. It was so annoying I nearly persuaded everyone to leave early. I couldn't so I was stuck there and enslaved by idiots for the whole night.

Here are some highlights:

The distribution of THOUSANDS of laser-pointers to tweaking, rolling 18-22 year olds prior to the concert, a huge sign of the bullshit to come
The complete mind-fuckization of every excellent song from their catalog
A total overemphasis on gimmicks and annoying bullshit throughout EVERY song
The lamest crowd I have ever been to, a cross between what I would expect a Ween show and a Phish show to be like
Completely uncalled for anti-Bush political soapbox speech for literally ten minutes before playing the Yeah Yeah song, so bad everyone (even the tweaking sheep) was yelling "shut up and play"
My favorite song, "Vein of Stars", was stopped halfway through (twice) to remind everyone where to point their laser pointer at the appropriate time
A countdown on the screen behind them saying "GET READY TO POINT YOUR LASER POINTER IN 5... 4... 3..."
A bunch of annoying and distracting assholes dancing all over the area where we were standing basically

You know, I can understand a little interactivity, even a production and light show. But for fuck's sake, when all that bullshit makes the music secondary, when the songs themselves become completely unnecessary to the bullshit circus you are putting on, then it might be time to address why you are doing it in the first place. Especially since it is obviously coming from the biggest ego in alternative rock. Personally, I think their last 3 albums have been amazing and I think At War With the Mystics is totally underrated, but I went to that concert expecting to hear some great songs and really get into the music and all I remember is being held captive by a bunch of cell-phone-video-taking, screaming and yelling assholes who didn't shut up for 5 seconds long enough to even know what song was being played, let alone get into the music. It sucked cat balls. All that fucking gimmicky shit and lights and balloons and air horns and confetti and glitter and explosions is NO DIFFERENT from all the stupid-ass laser-light smoke-bomb, dry-ice shit you would get at a Rush or Yes concert in 1979. (It might be worse.) If I wanted to see Blue Oyster Cult, I'd go see them, but there was this thing called punk rock which was supposed to clear up the whole music-versus-gimmick equation and I thought we already fought that revolution. Maybe some day that guy will get his shit together to realize what really counts is the great music he's writing, and come out and play his songs with a focus on the music to blow my mind, and seriously make an attempt to be a musician. But until he stops treating his songs like the backdrop to a big ego-feeding circus act, I want my $30 back.

you were annoyed by the anti-GWB ranting? The Yeah Yeah Yeah song is not exactly apolitical.... I thought the show was great, though there were a few assholes at the show pushing up to the front.

Sounds like the Belle and Sebastian show I went to like 3 years ago....except for all the gimmicks.

My problem is not that he wrote a song that rails against Bush. I don't even have a problem with someone introducing it a la Neil Young, like "this song is about _______" (although I do happen to think the music should speak for itself and I despise when bands take time out to explain their lyrics before playing a song).  My problem is that the guy spent (considerably) more time in a political rant to the converted that was more like an indierock/Democratic pep rally than he did actually playing the song.  I don't need it, I don't want to hear it, and I absolutely believe in the context of the other 5,000 distracting bullshit things taking place, sparklers, Santa Claus dancers, confetti and glitter pouring down in heaps, laser pointers, etc., that the "speech"/rant was not only misinformed and irrelevant, but crossed the barrier from slightly interesting to total embarassment.  As much as I don't like Bush, by 2006 railing against him at a Flaming Lips show for 15 minutes, before playing a song that rails against him anyway, crosses the line to "gimme a fuckin break" territory.

Compare something Fugazi might have said about Bush, or even Rollins' spoken-word parts to one of his more intense songs, where people were actually feeling some sort of coalescence, to the complete inanity of what Coyne did, and it makes his political views (and even the song, by default) nothing more than another one of his fucking gimmicks.

Dinosaur Jr. in Berlin.

I used earplugs for the whole show, they're definitely louder than MBV. Though it's not the main point of the show...
Lou had to turn his monitor towards the crowd to make it possible to hear his vocals  :D
Great crowd, the mosh-pit went wild after Feel the Pain...
The band is still on top, don't miss them live!
well there once were two cowboys all alone out on the trail

I had a chance to see them live with some friends, but was out of town when the show came.....

Saw Vivian Girls last night.  It was great to go to see a fantastic set in a really small venue again.

hope sandoval and the warm inventions on wednesday.  i got to sit in the front row at the venue (which was very intimate and dark, its a synagogue).  after the show, i was literally like 10 feet away from colm while he smoked a cigarette outside, but he was talking to some photographer the whole time and i never built up the courage to talk to him.  i felt like the biggest moron in the world after that.  the show was pleasant though.  i was probably the youngest person in attendance by about 15 to 20 years.

Just came back from seeing Kevin Smith. Our balcony seat was right up on the stage. He went for about 3.5 hours or so, 1.5 of which was related to a question about Zack and Miri Make a Porno.

The Doves

They were playing the title track and got out of time with each other, and had to restart it. That was kind of funny. Other than that, interesting but standard show.

Saint Etienne at the Ritz in Manchester. I'm glad I saw them perform (nearly) the same set earlier this year in Sheffield, cos the recent one was slightly ruined by a shit sound system, and a high percentage of the crowd yelling at each other throughout. At least they pulled something out from So Tough this time.
