Last gig you went to/how was it?
« on: July 12, 2009, 03:42:33 AM »
Thought it was about time we discussed the gigs we've been to...

Maps + The Phenomenal Handclap Band, Manchester Deaf Institute.

Maps are now a just a 2 piece live; much preferred them as a 4/5 piece with guitars and drums. Played mainly new material; they've gone quite 'techno' to be honest, and the set was littered with sound problems and technical hitches. James seemed to be really quite gutted about it. Shame. Some nice swirly synth sounds though...

The Phenomenal Handclap Band were good fun. 8 piece with lots of percussion. Funky. Cool girls. Cool boys. Very NYC. Like a modern day Sly & The Family Stone. Not my usual cup of tea, but enjoyable.

Maps were great when I saw them in 2007, looking forward to seeing them again at Latitude.

Just got home from 'mumford and sons' ...
 Really really good .
Excellent live band   ... I've never heard the recorded material.
Essence of neutral milk hotel but nothing like them....
Fun, moving, loud, precise ....
Look into them of you can

fiery furnaces- it was a free show in the park yesterday afternoon.  i wasn't impressed with them.  at all.  i've never heard any of their records though.
next weekend is pitchfork fest.  looking forward to that (only going on sunday).  i'm also going to a few of the lollapalooza after parties (i'm going to four shows in a row that week- i'm going to be worthless at work).

Saw David Byrne a few weeks ago.  Good show.

MBV - Eh, I guess they were okay. WTF was with the lack of Tiger in My Tank?

I know!  They left out all of the hits!  Who gives a shit about "To Here Knows When" when we could be listening to "The Devil Made Me Do It"?

sonic youth, last monday

i thought it was awesome, even if they played almost nothing but stuff from their new album (not to say its bad, though).  i have never enjoyed a song at a concert as much as i enjoyed the sprawl at that show.  some reviewers said the looked bored, but i havent seen them before and they seemed totally into it to me.

next gig: mbv, 7/30
(then dino, jr. in october)

My last gig was Blur. I loved it, but I know how 99% of this board feels about them so I'll keep schtum.  8)

Next gig: Latitude Festival, which means Nick Cave, The Vaselines, Saint Etienne, Maps, Tricky, Spiritualized, 65DaysOfStatic, Mew, Regina Spektor, Of Montreal, Thom Yorke et al. Considering I'm going for free, it sounds hella good to me.

Flaming Lips (w/Stardeath and the White Dwarfs)

I touched Wayne's ball and Karen picked a fight.

Stardeath is Wayne Coyne's nephew's band. They were good. Sounded like Transmissions From the Satellite Heart/Clouds Taste Metallic-era Flaming Lips.

Flaming Lips themselves were great. Probably best concert, visually, that I've been to. The music was good too, though I wasn't familiar with all the songs.

intro from last night's Flaming Lips show. You can see Karen's hands (in the leather jacket) at the 1:32 - 2:06 mark. I'm the blond head in front to the left of her. (that's Karen in the video still)
