just wanted to post this somewhere:

lol at choosing Touched to represent MBV. That's Colm solo, right?

Would be nice. I'd almost have activity rather than infrequent hints. I'm still wondering why the represses have taken so long

Other Band Discussion / Re: new Ride > new Slowdive

oh I think Slowdive at their peak are easily the better band and I saw them live for this album's tour as well... but I feel like the album is a bit generic and has some really bad mixing involved in the vocals.  There seems to be a trend in recent shoegaze bands to have the vocals really low in the mix and it doesn't seem to fulfill any purpose other than "that's just what shoegaze does", but instead of contributing to some sort of sonic aesthetic where the vocals accentuate the music, it mostly just sounds like shitty mixing where the melody is inaudible. I know this is like the least important area in shoegaze, but damned if some of it doesn't sound garbled or just plain goofy on this album.

I wasn't too keen on the singles for the new Ride, but they somehow worked better in the context of the album. And where I felt Slowdive was a bit too safe, the new Ride felt a bit more adventurous; it didn't always work, and it's still not a great album, but there was something likable about it. It also felt that the moments that didn't quite work felt ill-informed or just not pulled off well whereas the flaws in Slowdive felt like they should've been caught at some point, but they didn't bother due to general laziness.

Overall I can see preferring the new Slowdive as it's much more of an actual Shoegaze album whereas Ride is mostly building off of GBA, but I found Ride to be more engaging.

Can's last three albums.

Out of Reach is mostly crap.

Can/Innerspace is not bad but kind of boring.

Rite Time would be better if Malcolm wasn't the singer. I like him, but his voice is shit on that album. Otherwise fairly decent tunes.

Fantano seems to be the most notable, but mostly just various users on various forums here and there.

yeah the more positive reviews are a bit over the top. At the same time, some of the really negative reviews are pretty weird too. It's certainly not without its faults, but I'm really not sure what some were expecting.

any thoughts on the new album? I like it overall, but I'm bothered by how the vocals are mixed on a few tracks. Rachel is consistently mixed too low and a couple tracks like Slomo sound like the vocals are stumbling over each other.

I also saw them live the other night. Very good except for the sound problems during their encore.

I didn't get any raw files, though I imagine it's the same. Dean's thing has two previously unreleased tracks that were only released in radically remixed forms.

I like it and it definitely made me more interested in the new album... but I think it could've been a bit better. It sounds like it wants to crescendo, but doesn't.

I still listen to it frequently. I've noticed it getting a bit more love after it seems like all the hype started dying off and the backlash began. My bet is that if it comes to spotify, it'll gain more appreciation from those who wrote it off.

ha, I recognised some of those titles but didn't realise that much of it would potentially involved reworked material. It puts a damper on things a bit, but it's possible that a lot of it could be an improvement. I don't recall anything by Lazycame being particularly good and Freeheat, while enjoyable, was sort of a lightweight version of Munki.
