I feel like the '90s are back.
I just discovered L7 will be going on tour, Babes In Toyland are reforming and will probably release new music and we "just" got a record from MBV.
Then there's Swans, Ride, Slowdive, Sleater-Kinney, Aphex Twin, Swervedriver (did I miss something?)... Seriously. It's like we're back in the '90s, not that there's anything wrong with that.
What's next, Slint writing a third album?

Other Band Discussion / Re: Best Albums of 2014

Stellar year regardless.

It's so sad I'm never able to say that. Everytime, by the end of the year I realize I've listened to just a few things that caught my years through singles or things like that. I think this year has been the worst of the last few ones. I really can't get into electronic music, it just sounds to me like it lacks something (even though I had my share of noise/power electronics stuff, like Puce Mary), so I can't get even close to the end of a records. Also, the records I should have liked felt totally boring.

Though, there were a few highlights:
- St. Vincent - s/t
- Xiu Xiu - Angel Guts: Red Classroom
- Azealia Banks - Broke With Expensive Taste
- Pharmakon - Bestial Burden
(a big disappointment, still)
- Blood Red Shoes - s/t
- Ariel Pink - Pom Pom
- FKA Twigs - LP1
- Death Grips - The Powers That B pt. I
(I just love Björk)
- tUnE yArDs - Nikki Nack...

Albums I listened to a few times and enjoyed some songs of:
- Thom Yorke - Tomorrow's Modern Boxes
- EMA - The Future's Void
- Thee Oh Sees - Drop

Records I really didn't like or felt completely indifferent about:
- The War On Drugs - Lost In The Dream
- Pixies - Indie Cindy: how to ruin a band's discography with three Eps and a sudden bassist change
- Perfect Pussy - Say Yes To Love: once you've heard one, you've heard them all...Driver is not that bad though
- The Horrors - Luminous
- Swans - To Be Kind: At first I thought it was good...but I basically enjoyed 2 songs
- Perfume Genius - Too Bright: as above
- Mac DeMarco - Salad Days: just two songs. The rest basically sounds like 2's songs
- Jack White - Lazaretto: I liked the title track and High Ball Stepper, but I got bored by the rest of it
- Blonde Redhead - Barragàn: One of the ones I really had a struggle with. It's so sad hearing them now. They never where the best band in dream pop/shoegaze, but at least there were good/excellent records, like In An Expression of The Inexpressible, Melody Of Certain Damaged Lemons an my favorite, Misery Is A Butterfly. Now they just sound like Blonde Redhead trying to write generic indie music. Luckily there was some good on it too, like No More Honey. Kazu can still deliver good vocals.
- Sun Kill Moon - Benji

Looking forward to 2015, though. Melody's Echo Chamber, Bjork, MBV (maybe), PJ Harvey, and other stuff I can't recall right now.

Björk - Vulnicura
I probably shouldn't have, but I couldn't be patient about it.
It's a strange album I wouldn't really expect from her after Biophilia.
It's a really dark record, even though I think we should avoid thinking about how it sounds (it might actually be a demo or an incomplete version of the actual thing), but still...
I like how she takes elements from her entire discography, in fact the album sounds a lot like her Homogenic/Vespertine-era stuff (it features strings with electronic beats similar to the ones on Homogenic, and it sounds intimate like Vespertine, without the music-box sounds), but there are also moments that remind me of Medulla and Biophilia (somehow I think the latter is mainly recalled by the words used in the lyrics and in the progression of the songs - there's actually a moment when she says "mutual cordinates" where I really thought she was going to say "mutual core").
This is definitely a comeback album (as much as I liked Biophilia), and it's probably the most personal she's ever sounded on record (some of the songs address the departure from Matthew Barney, some other seem to be referring to death).

And what about the website with demos and thrown-away songs? Am I the only one to remember he said he'd definitely make one?

Swervedriver - Setting Sun

new single. I think I'd like it better in the context of an album, but it also fades out just as it sounds like it's about to take off. pretty underwhelming.

edit: did they remove their facebook page?
Well, it's not like this hasn't already happened on other releases in the shoegaze/dream pop genre. Slowdive are the ones that first did that on Souvlaki. Everytime something was going in a strange or differenti direction, the songs ended or faded.

yay, new Melody's Echo Chamber:

I hope the record will be better than this track. It's not that I don't like it, but it lacks the colorful sounds her debut had. It's kind of stuck between her debut and her stuff as My Bee's Garden. It might have to do with the fact Kevin didn't produce it.

I was really underwhelmed by the FKA Twigs album but I was talking with some people last night who told me the EPs were waaay better, so maybe those are worth trying.

I actually already did. I can honestly say that she changed her style a lot between the three releases. EP2, for example, featured a more trip-hop oriented sound and writing.
She has an elegant and refined sound, but to me her LP didn't work too well as an album. It was a bit too samey and sometimes the songs were too slow or flat (though this is probably mainly related to my taste). It's still the best pop(?) release I've heard this year with St. Vincent (I'd say that's pop too), and I can see why it's said to be"futuristic", but seeing the hype and interest people showed in this record I expected something more.
I'll still be looking forward to whatever she'll release in the future.

EDIT: By the way, yes, they ARE worth trying. If you're into music videos too, hers are pretty cool. She definitely built up an interesting aesthetic sense through her short career.

There are good tracks on this LP, but I wouldn't consider it as groundbreaking and perfect as critics are making it.
Still, there are some good songs, and she's actually an interesting singer/composer.

What will the Ep be named?
If they keep up with the loveless' names, it could be something like "vibrato", "bending" or "hammer on/pull off".

Also, does anybody know what happened to the new Melody's Echo Chamber record?
She posted a song on soundcloud as a demo, but I don't know if it was related to the project. Also, is the new album going to be released as Melody's Echo Chamber? The name of her facebook page has changed from "Melody's Echo Chamber" to "Melody Prochet".

There's a bit more in this interview. They are working on something, but nothing has been recorded yet. There's still no general direction about the sound or the way the new album will sound.

Been listening to the old Beach House releases. I think I like the first two albums more than Teen Dream and Bloom. The first album is soo good.

I've also been listening to some Current 93 albums and singles. Which ones from their catalog are the best releases?

that teaser for an album teaser got me more excited than it should...
I hoped for some kind of news immediately after that, or even a single release, but it looks like there won't be anything.

Also, the new Swans' album is streaming.
